Five for fighting … and laughing: August’s best bets for stand-up comedy in Wisconsin

By Peter Lindblad

Even though school is still out for the summer, comedy class is now in session.

Bored Teachers are taking their “We Can’t Make This Stuff Up!” act on the road in August, with a stop at Green Bay’s Meyer Theatre scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 10. So, do your homework beforehand by heading to https://www.boredteachers.com/comedy-tour for more information. There may or may not be a test.

Nobody is getting sent to the principal’s office at a Bored Teachers’ show, which boasts class clowns like Devin Siebold, KC Mack, Tell Williams, Vinny Thomas, Jess Merrill, Gerry Brooks, Andrea Caspari, Jared Waters, Mike Rivera and Leslie Rob – actual teachers with a cheeky sense of humor, doing stand-up comedy without a lesson plan.

Nobody needs a laugh more than teachers these days. And comic relief is on the way, with the cathartic experience of Bored Teachers telling funny tales out of school that educators and anybody who’s ever been to school can relate to. They’ve got skits for viewing on the internet, and they’ll make your sides hurt – hundreds of millions of views can’t be wrong.

More great stand-up comedy is coming to the Badger State in August. Here’s a preview:

Comedy on State – Madison

Dave Attell (Aug. 24-26) – Waking up to find Dave Attell in your bed after a night on the town and no memory of how he got there means a good time was had. The legendary night owl used to host Comedy Central’s cult classic “Insomniac with Dave Attell,” where Attell would commiserate with late-shift workers and hang out in bars until the break of dawn, laughing the pain away in a boozy haze of bad decisions and misanthropic behavior. We’ve all been there, but Attell has the receipts, and his dark comedy – often turning a deep shade of blue – digs a relentlessly funny rabbit hole of debauchery you’ll want to go down, even if you’re a little afraid. You’ve probably seen him in Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck,” HBO’s “Crashing” with Pete Holmes or “Scary Movie 4.” But he’s in his element onstage, as you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCe9N93kHMk&t=10s

Milwaukee Improv – Milwaukee (Well, Brookfield, actually)

Eddie Griffin (Aug. 11-12) – A star was born when Griffin took the stage years ago on a dare at a local Kansas City comedy club. Then, he appeared in the hit movie – the 2018 remake with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper – of the same name. Naturally funny, Griffin is a fast-talking comic with a sharp, satirical style that gets real about race relations, religion, sex and drugs, generating explosive laughter. He’s appeared in films like “Norbit” and “Undercover Brother,” stealing scenes like nobody’s business. Skyline Comedy Club – Appleton

Adam Carolla (Aug. 25-26) – Adam Carolla shoots from the hip and rarely misses. In more recent years, he’s reinvented himself as a podcasting mogul, after being known as co-host of Comedy Central’s “The Man Show” with close friend Jimmy Kimmel and “Loveline” with Dr. Drew on MTV. His improvisational, off-the-cuff brilliance and willingness to speak his mind makes him an unpredictably hilarious stand-up comic, with his “Unprepared” show based on suggestions from the audience. Check out his website for more information: https://adamcarolla.com/. Carolla was the cover story for the August edition of Out & About Wisconsin. The Laughing Tap – Milwaukee

Matt Braunger (Aug. 26) – The acting chops are there. The good-natured Braunger (https://www.mattbraunger.com/) has been on ABC’s “Agent Carter” and Netflix’s “Disjointed,” among a slew of other shows. During his well-paced stand-up routines, he likes to joke about the male anatomy, but he also draws from fatherhood and marriage to make easily accessible comedy. Audiences hardly have time to take a breath when Braunger – schooled in theatre and improvisation – is on fire. Get a taste here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhQ3iLj3VTg
