‘A Day on the Farm’ comes to UW-Platteville

A Day on the Farm is a FREE event open to the public that will be held on Saturday, November 11, at UW-Platteville’s Pioneer Farm located at 29200 College Farm Road, Platteville. Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., visitors to the farm will take a self-guided tour of the farm to several different educational stations provided by the UW-Platteville College of Agriculture student groups.

In addition to the educational stations, local businesses will be offering samples of agricultural products, there will be a dog agility demonstration, and Insight FS will have their Spray Applicator Simulator available for visitors to try their hand at operating a piece of farm equipment. Real tractors will be lined up along the driveway for a close-up view and maybe even a spot for a photo!

One of the first stops on the self-guided tour should be the milking parlor and milkhouse. A large window looks out to the area of the milk cows and robotic milking machines. Visitors will observe how the milk is moved from the cows to the milk house, where it is cooled and stored until it is transported to the milk production plants.

Around the corner is the free-stall barn where the cows spend most of their time when not being milked. Visitors can walk down the middle of the barn, view what and how the cows eat, where they sleep, and maybe even give one a pat.

For more interaction with the animals, a farm animal petting zoo can be found inside the Education Pavilion. Here visitors can pet and touch a pig, goat, calf, and even a horse.

There will be so much do to and learn at A Day on the Farm! For more information, visit the Platteville Regional Chamber’s website at www.platteville.com or call (608) 348-8888.
