Annual “Hope’s Lights” event aids homeless animals

The Wisconsin Humane Society will be shining bright this holiday season with thousands of lights in honor of homeless animals. If you drive by any of their campuses (Milwaukee, Saukville, Racine, Green Bay, Door County, or Kenosha) in December, you’ll see their buildings lit up with thousands of beautiful lights. Each one of those lights represents a gift someone made to help the thousands of animals and families served by WHS annually.

Penny is just one of the many animals whose life has been saved by the Wisconsin Humane Society.

Every year, WHS features a “Hope’s Lights” animal, whose story has really touched their hearts. In 2024, that animal is Penny.  Penny was blind, alone, and helpless when a kind-hearted passerby wrapped her in a towel and brought her to WHS. Her eyes were swollen, watering, and ruptured. The signs of infection were clear and had already led to blindness in both eyes. The next steps were inevitable.   As soon as she was stable enough for surgery, the WHS vet team removed her eyes before things could get even worse for Penny.

The morning after her procedure, she perked up upon hearing her first visitors, warmly greeted her care team and rolled over for belly rubs. As her incisions healed, her joyful spirit began to shine. Contentment turned to bouncy tail-wags. Once she was medically cleared for adoption, Penny wasted no time finding a loving home and has been thriving there ever since.

Please help WHS kick off the season of giving with a gift to Hope’s Lights. To donate a light for $25 in honor or memory of a beloved pet, contact the Wisconsin Humane Society at wihumane.org/hope or call (414) 431- 6119. Even a single light will make a real difference in the life of an animal in need. Looking for a meaningful gift? You can purchase a light in honor or memory of a beloved pet or animal-lover in your life and send a card to let them know.
