Alton Brown talks funny chefs, culinary variety show

By Peter Lindblad

“Beyond the Eats: Alton Brown Live” is coming back to Wisconsin, as the brainy celebrity chef looks to entertain and amaze with his dazzling, one-of-a-kind culinary variety show.

Come for the mind-blowing food demonstrations but stay for the perilous high-wire act that blends possibly risky science projects, hilarious comedy, and delightful music, as Brown invades the Overture Center in Madison on March 6.

It promises to be a rip-roaring good time. Brown told Out & About Wisconsin all about it in the cover story for our September 2021 issue. You can read it here: http://www.mirabelsmagazinecentral.com/digitaledition/index.html?id=337463e0-6052-4c56-b7b4-c81c2267b369

Brown is no stranger to the stage, with his interactive “Edible Inevitable Tour” and “Eat Your Science” shows playing to more than 350,000 people in over 200 cities. “Beyond the Eats: Alton Brown Live” is even more ambitious.

He warns, “Prepare for an evening unlike any other and if I call for volunteers… think twice.” Brown says his latest creation allows him to try things TV wouldn’t have allowed.

A Food Network star for more than 20 years, having developed, written, and served as host of “Good Eats,” “Good Eats: Reloaded” and “Good Eats: The Return,” Brown has also been ringmaster on “Cutthroat Kitchen” and lent his expert commentary on “iron Chef America.”

Late last summer, when Brown was interviewed, he discussed the relationship between comedy and cooking. It all works together for Brown and his stage shows.

“We have a sign over the studio door that says, ‘Laughing Brians are more Absorbent,’” said Brown. “It’s just a lot easier to teach people when they’re laughing and frankly, we’re suffering a shortage of laughter these days. So, I do use whatever comedic abilities I have to the fullest. Comedy brings people together just like food.”

What didn’t appear in our original article was Brown’s response this question: Who are the funniest chefs you know, and, conversely, do you know any comics who would make great chefs?

Here’s what Brown had to say: “Most of the chefs I know have great senses of humor … you just have to to survive. Michael Symon is hilarious. So is Antonia Lofaso. As far as comics cooking, I bet Jim Gaffigan knows his way around a grill.”

To get up close and personal with Brown, VIP Experience tickets are available. That gets you a prime seat location and an exclusive intimate Q&A before the show. VIP ticket holders will also be given first access to purchase tour merchandise without a line and will receive a VIP laminate when they enter the theater.
