Blast from the Past: Symco Show

By John Gunnell

A bunch of “Betty’s” ready for the pin-up contest.

Each August, the Symco Rod & Kustom Weekender fills  the Unionville Thresheree Grounds in Symco, Wis., with great examples of traditional hot rods, rockabilly bands, pin-up girls, vintage camping trailers, and people. “Symco” was one of the few car events that stayed on schedule throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and grew larger after it. This year’s event is set for Aug. 10-12.

Like many traditional hot rod shows, Symco has a unique venue that “fits” the vintage style cars and the vintage hot rod lifestyle. The Union Thresherman’s Club maintains the grounds that a man named Larry Werth put together as a private antique village filled with old-time buildings, steam-powered tractors, and other vintage attractions.

In addition to the hundreds of hot rods and kustom cars that rumble into Symco each year for the Weekender event, Symco is also loaded with old bicycles, mini bikes, beauty shops and barber shops that offer old-time hairdos, vendors selling vintage clothing, picnic baskets, 1950s Coke coolers, and other old-time lifestyle accessories. Pinewood Derby races were run for kids, and a charity pinstripe auction was held Friday.

In past years, there was even a vendor offering classic wood-cabinet stereos and period furniture such as sofas, televisions, and lamps. Groovy Wood Studios of Madison, Wis., specializes in selling these old school items. “I’m a purveyor of nostalgia,” owner Steve Paulet told us. “I sell feelings, deep-down-feel-it-in-your-soul feelings.”

Although beautifully modified Fords and Chevys are commonly seen at Symco, a nice thing about the show is seeing the number of cars of other brands that enthusiasts are bringing back to useful lives by giving them the hot rod treatment or customizing them the way it was done years ago. Packards, Plymouths, Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs, Studebakers, and Dodges were seen throughout the grounds. There was even a Volvo!

The 2022 Symco Rod & Kustom Weekender marked the 13th consecutive year that shows of this type have been held at Unionville, and each annual edition of the event seems to get better. Symco attracts both older rodders and car collectors and younger lovers of the vintage cars and the lifestyle that goes with them. Although there’s no figures to back up this impression, it seems like a large number of veteran car fans take off in the late afternoon, while carloads of younger enthusiasts stream into the grounds at night to hear the bands play. This virtually doubles the total crowd size for the full weekend.

Only 1964 or earlier vehicles meeting certain criteria are permitted into the main grounds to preserve the unique atmosphere of Unionville. The criteria calls for traditional styled cars like those in the Little Pages or Hot Rod magazine from 1948-64. Gate inspectors check cars to see if they meet 1964-or-earlier style and equipment guidelines. There is, however, an alternate parking area for other types of collector vehicles

The Unionville show grounds feature 30 acres of camping with limited electrical hook-ups available. Pre-registration is highly recommended to reserve camping spots. Symco Rod & Kustom Weekender has over 150 swap spaces available for vendors. For more information, phone (920) 251-0920 or visit the Website: www.symcohotrods.com.

Car shows can be cancelled; car show dates can change; some shows depend on good weather. At Out & About Wisconsin, we make an extreme effort each month to include a phone number, email, or website for all events we list. Please use this information, in advance of traveling to events, to be sure there are no cancellations or changes.
