Triple play: Best in Wisconsin standup comedy this week (Apr. 15-21)

By Peter Lindblad

Anticipation is building for the arrival of Kevin Hart, who loves getting cash back. Not that he needs more of it.

Coming to Milwaukee’s Miller High Life Theatre, Hart sold out his show on Saturday, April 27, but another was added for April 28. Yes, we’re working a week ahead of schedule here, but it’s Kevin Hart, one of the biggest names in contemporary comedy … and Hollywood, for that matter. This is just an alert. There’s no siren to let you know Hart is coming, so this blog will have to do.

Full of charisma, the energetic Hart is a force of nature onstage, and he’s bringing new material. You might hear outrageously funny stories from his childhood or jokes about his family. He’s got a million of them, although it sounds like Hart’s been holding out on us. That’s forgivable, although Katt Williams might disagree.

JR De Guzman (April 18-20) – Speaking of Kevin Hart, the friendly, good-natured Guzman can be seen on Comedy Central’s “Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City.” Known as an entertaining storyteller, who fluidly mixes music and jokes, Guzman was born in the Philippines but grew up in California. He started out doing comedy while also teaching music. He won 2016’s “Stand-up NBC” and had the honor of being picked as a “New Face” at Just for Laughs 2017. Maybe they didn’t like his old one? Not sure if he’s had any work done. Anyway, Guzman is here “Working it Out,” so let’s see how it all unfolds. Go to https://jrdeguzman.com/ for more information.

Milwaukee Improv – Brookfield (https://improv.com/milwaukee/)

Chad Daniels (April 19-20) – Take a shot of the likeable and relatable Chad Daniels. Then, sit back and listen to him ease into riffing about his family, smiling as he tells dad jokes that are a little dark, to be completely honest. Watch out, kids; Daniels is out for blood. The Minnesota comic’s six albums have generated almost a billion streams, including Footprints on the Moon, the most streamed comedy LP of 2017. Check out his weekly podcast, “Middle of Somewhere,” featuring co-host Cy Amundson. Maybe he’ll make pancakes. Get the lowdown on Chad Daniels here: https://www.chaddaniels.com/

The Pabst Theater – Milwaukee (https://www.pabsttheatergroup.com/)

Jimmy Carr (April 17) – Prim and proper, with a surgical wit as sharp as a scalpel, the wickedly funny, deadpan British comic is “Terribly Funny,” as the title of his latest tour suggests. His newest @NetflixIsAJoke Special is called, “Jimmy Carr: Natural Born Killer.” No, he’s not a serial murderer. He’ll only hurt your feelings. Expect a heavy barrage of sharp one-liners that’ll trigger somebody’s sense of outrage. His humor is dry and dark, just how you like it. Order up at https://www.jimmycarr.com/
